Happy Halloween from my friend Mae!

Yesterday I had the pleasure of doing a spontaneous photo shoot of little Mae. Her beautiful mother was in my studio modeling for an upcoming magazine story on exercises that help prevent ski injuries. As we were finishing up the magazine shoot Mae and her father stopped by. Mae was instantly attracted to the pumpkins and nasturtiums that are sitting on the windowsill in my office. Here’s what happened as soon as she sat down with the pile of pumkins… I’m thinking she may have been watching the World Series with her dad the night before, she sure has quite the arm for a two year old! Enjoy!

Jeff and Carol have watched for 12 years as the farm garden grew from a small plot to a one-acre fruitful business. They have since added two large greenhouses and a partly enclosed tunnel, allowing them to grow things that normally would not succeed in the frost belt of Idaho, including a wide variety of greens. They also make jams and honey.

Clarence and Tona are producers for Idaho’s Bounty where they sell herbs, produce and their rich homemade dark chocolate sauce online. Their farm includes a greenhouse, ancient orchard and chicken coop. They treated us to a fresh asian green salad topped with Clarence’s delicious homemade vinaigrette dressing.

Petra’s Simple Pleasures (owned by Teri Backstrom) has been a part of Backstrom Farms (owned by Ken and Teri Backstrom) since 1994. They raise a small herd of goats for milk and meat. Their goat herd and flock of chickens enjoy organic alfalfa, grass hay & barley, which is raised on their small farm. They take pride in providing simple, pure products for the health and enjoyment of others. Visitors are always welcome. Have you ever milked a goat? Ken & Teri always welcome visitors to come and give it a try.

What is it that you look for when checking out a new town or city for the first time? Well for me it’s the local grocery store (preferably locally owned) and if it’s the right time of year the local farmers market. These two places can tell you so much about a place and the people that live there. Needless to mention I love taking time to cruz the isles of a grocery store. It’s the adventure of discovering new and sometimes old and forgotten products. My friend Pat Tanumihardja (a very talented freelance writer) and I visited the Crescent City Farmer’s market for the first time together. It was a great introduction to some of the local people & farmers of New Orleans for me. Regardless of where Farmer’s Markets are I feel they always give you such a great sense of community no matter how large or small the market may be. This morning I was fortunate enough to be introduced to Charles “Chuck” Williams, the founder of the Williams-Sonoma company and author and editor of dozens of books on the subject of cooking. Chuck received the Lifetime Achievement Award the previous night at the same IACP awards ceremony where I was awarded the “Best of Show Award” for photography.
